Standard 2 in P.E. deals with strategy. K-4 students are working on throwing at moving targets effectively this week. Students are exploring the differences and similarities of footballs and round balls. Students decide on which one is best. They have done a great job strategizing which type of ball to use, depending on their target and their comfortability level with that type of ball. Students are working out their brains and their bodies! Please, ask them about their class.
Students at all levels have been learning, performing, and applying motor skills using footballs. Kindergarteners could be found throwing and kicking at stationary targets. Second, third and fourth graders threw to stationary and moving targets. Third and Fourth graders also worked on catching skills. We focused on individual improvement and not team score. The students did a wonderful job! Please, ask them about their class. This week students will further develop bilateral integration. Students will participate in stack relays applying the motor patterns (Standard 1) we have practiced. Students will work on fine motor and gross motor skills using the mini-cups and jumbo stackers. Students will then integrate their stacking and throwing skills during a game called Cup Hunter. Please, ask them about their class.
This week students will continue to work to build muscle-memory and bi-lateral integration. Students will play a cardio version of Rock Paper Scissors using their feet. They will also continue to build hand-eye coordination by using the stacking cups. Students will play Stack Stealers and participate in stack relays which will build teamwork skills as well. Please ask them about their class.
This week the students are exploring new motor patterns using cup stacking. We will be using stacking cups to improve hand-eye coordination, ambidexterity and quickness. Students will also use the cups to build aerobic capacity during a game called Upstack/Downstack and work on the three stack. Students continue to focus on Standard 1 (motor patterns) and Standard 5 (valuing physical activity). students also built upper-body endurance during the game Rock Paper Scissors Olympics. Please, ask them about their class.
Students prepared themselves for Thanksgiving Day by reflecting on how thankful they are for their healthy bodies. We discussed the importance of a healthy diet and exercise to our health. Each class played turkey games to reinforce these concepts. K-2 fed the turkeys fruits and vegetables and got plenty of exercise while doing it. Grades 3 and 4 taught their turkeys to exercise and explored the concept of them being not only what they eat, but what they eat, eats. Please ask your children what they learned and have a fantastic holiday.
Students focused on Standard 4 this past week. Standard 4 teaches students about sportsmanship and teamwork. After working out during circuit training, students practiced a specific throwing pattern. Students then utilized that throwing pattern and applied the concept of teamwork during a game called One-Bounce Dr. It was a joy to watch the students strategize together and work toward their goal of scoring the most points during the game.
Students were able to assess their aerobic capacity this week with the PACER. PACER stands for progressive aerobic cardiovascular endurance run. They were able to utilize this tool to see if they have decreased, maintained or increased their level of aerobic capacity from 6 weeks ago. I am happy to announce that most students increased their levels. Students put in hard work during class each week and it is paying off. Please ask them how they did.
Congratulations to my third and fourth grade classes. Most students in each class increased their upper and middle body muscular endurance in the last month. This increase was measured by the push-up and curl-up assessments. Keep up the good work! K-1 worked on their throwing, striking, kicking, catching, and exercise skills. Please, ask them about what they did in class.
This week we continued on our journey to the perfect throw. 3rd and 4th grade really focused on transferring power from their body into the ball. We made sure we followed through toward our targets. All students had an opportunity to test their throwing patterns on elevated targets and low-level targets. The students showed their stuff while playing a game called ghost hunter. Please, ask them about it.
Hard to believe fall is here already. This week students are working on sharpening their throwing skills on stationary and moving targets. K-1 students practice basic throwing cues, which include pointing at our target, stepping toward our target and throwing at our target. Upper grades utilize the basic cues and focus on transferring their weight while throwing and following through toward their target. Students apply these skills in an anchor game called Pumpkin Patch. Please, ask them about it.
Classes spent their P.E. time this week in the great outdoors. Students worked on their Frisbee and catching skills. We played Frisbee ladders and enjoyed the sunshine!
Students are having another excellent week. Grades 2 through 4 understand how important flexibility is to their overall health. They participated in the Sit and Reach assessment which gives them an idea of how flexible their lower back and hamstrings are. K-1 is working on maturing their throwing patterns by practicing throwing at targets and played a game called One Bounce Doctor. Pre-K worked on a variety of skills and motor patterns. They have all done such a great job I am giving them Monday off.
We continue to work with Physical Education Standard 1. Standard 1 deals with motor skills and movement patterns. Students have been working on their fitness patterns. K-1 have been working on perfecting their Jumping Jacks and locomotor patterns. Grades 2-4 have been practicing their push-ups and curl-ups. Please encourage them to keep practicing at home as well. |
